Commentary
Revelers in Ueno Park walk along the foot of Suribachiyama 摺鉢山, "Grinding-Bowl Hill", an ancient burial mound named for the slight depression at its top. Behind them is a sign for Ryōdaishi 両大師, also known as Rinnōji 輪王寺, one of the few buildings that remains of the once-sprawling Kan'ei-ji temple complex, which was destroyed by fire during the Boshin War. Ueno Park itself was created from the empty space left behind by the destroyed Kan'ei-ji.
